Redheaded pine sawfly - Neodiprion lecontei

Description

Larvae are up to 30 mm long with reddish brown heads and yellow bodies with 6 rows of irregular black spots. Adults are brownish and wasp like.

Damage

Larvae feed in groups on 2 and needle pines and can completely defoliate a tree. Heavy infestations may kill small or weakened pines.

Cultural Controls

Prune out and destroy heavily infested branches.

Remarks

Treat foliage at the first sign of activity in mid-June. Apply chlothianidin or imidacloprid as a soil injection or drench in the fall. Spring applications should be made foliarly.
